Level 1 vs Level 2 EV Charging: What Every New EV Owner Needs to Know

If you just got your first EV, chances are you plugged it into a standard wall outlet in your garage the first night and watched the range estimate barely move. That's normal — and it's the difference between Level 1 and Level 2 charging.

Here's what every new EV owner should know before deciding how to charge at home.

What Is Level 1 Charging?

Level 1 charging uses a standard 120V household outlet — the same kind used for lamps and phone chargers. Nearly every EV comes with a Level 1 charging cable in the trunk, which makes it tempting to think that's all you need.

The problem is speed. Level 1 charging typically adds only 3-5 miles of range per hour. For someone who drives less than 30-40 miles a day and can charge overnight, this might technically work. For most households, it doesn't come close to keeping up.

What Is Level 2 Charging?

Level 2 charging uses a 240V circuit — the same voltage as an electric dryer or range. This dramatically increases charging speed, typically adding 20-40+ miles of range per hour depending on the vehicle and charger.

💡 Key Point

A Level 2 charger can take an EV from empty to full overnight. Level 1 often cannot, especially for larger-battery vehicles or households with more than one EV.

What Does a Level 2 Install Actually Involve?

Unlike Level 1 (which just needs an existing outlet), Level 2 charging requires:

This is why Level 2 installs should always be done by a licensed electrician — it's genuinely new electrical work, not just plugging in a cord.

Do I Need to Upgrade My Panel?

Not always, but it depends on your panel's current capacity and what else is running on it. This is exactly why a proper install starts with an electrician evaluating your panel first — see our panel upgrade guide for the signs your panel might already be due for one.

Is Level 1 Ever Enough?

For plug-in hybrids with small batteries, or drivers with very short daily commutes and consistent overnight charging time, Level 1 can be workable. For most full-EV owners, especially with a daily commute or more than one EV in the household, Level 2 is worth the investment.
